The typical building industry uses structural insulated panels (SIPs), but many contain toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). OTechnology designs are constructed with our own unique SIPFS that include the highest level of sustainable building techniques with no VOC-polluting materials.

Environmental Benefits

SIPFS are prefabricated insulated structural elements for use in building walls, ceilings, floors, and roofs. They provide superior and uniform insulation compared to more traditional construction methods (stud or “stick frame”), offering energy savings of 12%–14%. When installed properly, they also provide a more airtight dwelling, which makes a house more comfortable and quieter. Using SIPFS creates a superior building envelope with high thermal resistance and minimal air infiltration, creating an extremely energy efficient structure.

Insulation and air sealing lowers the monthly utility bills by reducing electric and gas use at the point of consumption. Due to the inefficiency of energy production and transmission, the small amount of electricity that is saved at the home reduces a larger amount of produced power demand at the power plant, thus reducing the demand for electrical power plants. Fewer required power plants means less air and water pollution as well as a reduction in the environmental impacts of resource extraction.

Health and / or Social Benefits

Our SIPFS designs allow for better control over indoor air quality because the airtight building envelope limits incoming air to controlled ventilation. Controlled ventilation filters out contaminants and allergens, and also allows for incoming air to be dehumidified, reducing the possibility for mold growth.

In the last several years, a growing body of scientific evidence has indicated that the air within homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. Other research indicates that people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. Thus, for many people, the risks to health may be greater due to exposure to air pollution indoors than outdoors.  The families who live in homes that focus on creating better indoor air quality report fewer negative health effects, including asthma episodes.
